I think you are right, A strong will can change everything and parents should help but not dictate the direction of career. If someone is dictated to, it does soften the will.

I would like to share an example. One of my friends grew up in an unstable environment. He moved between several foster homes. However, he had a strong will and knew what he wanted to do. He is now a world leading expert in his field of work. His achievement is due to his strong will to succeed.
