I was thinking about what would happen if surrealism had existed in a very ancient era, where it was interwoven with sepia tones, handwritten letters on papyrus or parchment, where surreal designs could be blended with the diverse textures of ancient papers, and not only that, but where surrealism could be combined with watercolours, diverse styles and eras united within a single design.

I looked for different elements, such as watercolour images, splashes of colour, antique papers, and subtle botanical decorations, all harmoniously arranged in a composition reminiscent of an old postcard. I then added 3D and surrealist images, a horse and, of course, a woman’s face. The idea was to bring all the images together into a single whole, so that they blend and merge, whilst also resembling a single drawing.

Pensaba en que pasaría si el surrealismo hubiera existido en una época muy antigua, donde estuviera entremezclado entre colores sepias, cartas escritas a mano en papiros o pergaminos, donde se pudiera mezclar diseños surreales con texturas diversas de papeles antiguos y no sólo eso sino mezclar el surrealismo con las acuarelas, estilos y épocas diversas unidas en un mismo diseño.

Busqué distintos elementos, como imágenes con acuarelas, manchas, papeles antiguos, sutiles decoraciones con plantas, todo muy armónico en una composición que tiende a imaginar una postal antigua pero luego le sume imágenes en 3D, surrealistas, un caballo y por supuesto un rostro femenino. La idea era unir todas las imágenes en un todo, que se amalgamen y fusiones y además de todo eso que se asimilen a un dibujo.

Design process

The design was created entirely in Photoshop CS6 without the use of AI, using 12 royalty free images spread across 19 layers.

I created a beige layer to serve as a background, onto which I placed the two watercolour images, superimposed using the ‘Darken’ blending mode; on top of these, I placed the cut-out leaves and pieces of old paper, arranged across four separate layers in ‘Normal’ mode. I then selected sections of the image containing the text and used them on various layers with the ‘Darken’ blending mode, in different parts of the design.

For the images of the flowers, the 3D abstract design and the horse, I used the ‘Darken’ blending mode, whilst for the surrealist image featuring various shapes, I used the ‘Spot Light’ blending mode. I added a ‘Add Edge’ filter to all of them and also brightened them considerably as they were dark images.

For the images featuring plants or vegetation, I placed them on top of the previous layer using the ‘Darken’ and ‘Darker Colour’ blending modes. I did the same with the lighthouse image, where I erased part of the background and also applied the filter used previously. With the image of the woman, I created two layers, having first erased the background, using the ‘Darker Colour’ and ‘Soft Light’ blending modes, as well as the ‘Added Edges’ filter. Finally, I brightened the entire design once more to bring out the colours.

Proceso del diseño

El diseño está realizado completamente en el programa Photoshop CS6 sin uso de IA con 12 imágenes sin derechos de autor distribuidas en 19 capas.

Creé una capa color beige para establecer una capa fondo sobre la que coloqué las dos imágenes de acuarelas superpuestas con fusión de color más oscuro y sobre ellas puse, recortadas las hojas o papel antiguo dispuestas en cuatro capas distintas en modo normal. Luego seleccioné trozos de la imagen con la escritura y las usé en diversas capas con la fusión de color más oscuro, en distintas partes del diseño.

Con las imágenes de las flores, el abstracto en 3D, el caballo, usé la fusión de color más oscuro y con la imagen surrealista que tiene diversas formas, la fusión de luz focal. A todas les añadí un filtro de bordes añadidos y además les di mucha luz porque eran imágenes oscuras.

En el caso de las imágenes con plantas o vegetación las puse sobre el anterior y con la fusión de oscurecer y color más oscuro. Lo mismo en el caso de la imagen del faro, donde borré parte del fondo y también coloqué el filtro antes usado. Con la imagen de la mujer hice dos capas, borrando previamente el fondo, usando fusiones de color más oscuro y luz suave y el filtro de bordes añadidos. Finalmente volví a dar más luz al diseño completo para realzar los colores.
