Think about it, if you were generous before you had money, having more money simply gives your generosity a much bigger stage. Someone who used to share their small lunch with a friend might become the person who pays someone’s school fees when they can afford it. Someone who was always helping family members when they had very little may become the person funding businesses, supporting relatives, or donating to causes once they have the means. The money didn't create their generosity. It simply gave that generosity more room to operate.
The same thing happens on the other side. If someone was selfish when they had very little, becoming wealthy can give them far more opportunities to express that selfishness. If they were already obsessed with status, money can give them bigger houses, more expensive cars, and more impressive things to use as symbols of that status. If they were arrogant, suddenly having people constantly agree with them can make that arrogance much louder.
This is where I think the phrase “money changes people” can sometimes be misleading, maybe just maybe we just notice people more once they have money. A person can be rude for twenty years and nobody cares because nobody is paying attention to them. Give that same person millions, and suddenly their behaviour becomes a topic of conversation. We don't necessarily see a different person. We simply see the person they already were on a much larger screen.
Of course, I wouldn't say money has absolutely no effect on people. Having financial security can change the choices available to you. It can reduce certain pressures, increase your independence, expose you to new environments, and even influence how you think about the future. Recent research as i saw on twitter suggests that income can have some effects on personality traits over time, meaning the relationship between money and personality isn't completely one directional but I believe ultimately that character matters enormously. Money is like a microphone, give a kind person a microphone and more people hear their kindness. Give a selfish person one and everyone hears their selfishness.
