I remember that lonely day,
Snow fell and coated the land.
A young child was walking,
His face flushed as he rounded the bend.
His back was pelted with snow,
His tiny hands were shivering in the cold.
I recalled how my heart ached for that little soul,
He was merely four or five years old.
I called out to him and he looked my way,
"Little boy, where are you going,
The road ahead is rugged and long."
He had tears in his eyes,
But a wistful smile lit up his face.
"To find my mommy", he said,
"It has been a long wait."
He ran towards me amidst squeals,
And I held out my arms to him.
I felt no warmth, as the cold seeped into me.
I remembered holding the lifeless body in my hands, as he disappeared into dust.
And then I woke up,
The tears still caught in my eyes.
I remember the lost child who walks in the snow,
Who endured the pain and harsh cold.
I remember how in my dream I yearn to call him mine,
It was what my heart wanted to do, no asking why.
And I woke up only to realize,
That the little lost child, was all along, mine.
Dear lost child,
I'm sorry for not holding you tight,
For not loving you more when I could,
For not being there when I should.
Dear lost child,
I will never forget about you.
Thank you for coming back to me,
To let me have that final glimpse.
Thank you for the long walk you've endured,
Thank you for loving me too,
Even though what you wanted from me,
Was actually, one last goodbye.
