Over the course of my life, I’ve come across people who have affected my life in so many amazing way. When I say this I don’t even mean big gestures, it’s mostly the little things that stick with me the most. I’m grateful I am someone who sees people through blurry or thin lenses and still feel how big their heart is.
Today I woke up thinking about someone from many lives ago. I don’t remember her name but I remember her face, her voice and her smile. She was my business studies teacher back in secondary school. She was great at her job. I can still hear her voice as she dictated notes and she would always make sure everyone was following.
I admired her and even more the way she carried herself, she moved with grace and confidence.
She taught us business studies and I hated that course because it wasn’t fun. But I was good at it because I liked her. I just had to put in the effort to understand her teachings and do well in my tests because I wanted to make her happy.
One of my happiest days in school was one Monday after resumption, she showed up in class and after teaching she told me to come to her office. I went and she gave me a wrapped gift, it wrapped in a blue wrapping paper with butterflies on it, I was thrilled. It was a simple gift but that gesture stayed with me throughout and after my secondary school days. I remember the days when her smile was the only thing that kept me going.
On some mornings, catching a glimpse of her favorite sky blue blazer during morning assembly was all the reason I needed to take my duty on that day seriously.
I was a sad kid in school and her kindness brought several warmth to my heart.
I think about her this day and I say a little prayer and hope she’s okay, I hope life has been kind to her.
I thought about finding a way to reach out to her but I’m also not in the mental space for that at the moment. While I was thinking about her, I wondered if she’s still alive, I’m not sure why. I also wondered if she’s still the same kind person I knew.
Anyways, I’m grateful to have had her back then.
