After Playing Splinterlands I wanted to see what the other games on the Hive Blockchain had to offer, After a quick look at Dapp.com and Dapprader.com I wandered into Exode.
I looked up videos and searched for reviews but there weren't many and while that caused me some hesitation I still leapt in, Exode uses Trading Cards as pieces you input whenever you start a new game. I bought myself a Starter pack ($10) and three Booster Packs ($3 Each). The Starter pack would be the leader of your colony, The three options are Navy Lieutenant, ARK Scientist, and Elected Leader.
There are pros and cons to each starter and I wasn't looking to get into the specifics so I chose the Navy Lieutenant who is specialized in combat and came with cards that complimented that.
All pretty standard stuff it seemed for a combat leader but then I went to open my booster packs not knowing what the heck would appear.
I got some more cards that were meant for combat and some cargo cards along with another leader type card that I could use to start the game. The Repentant Pirate!
I had no idea what I was looking at and I would research it later but its a legendary so that's pretty awesome!
Once opening the menus to start a new game you'll see that many of the features are not included yet.
But at least you can play the game! When you start you select the Origin, Starship, Equipment, Officers, and Crew. I just chose the Navy Lieutenant and ship they came with.
After Filling the slots I thought I was ready for the game.
After spending some skill points to sort of upgrade my officers and crewmen and find out more about their talents and traits I continued onward,
This was the first thing I saw.
What the heck? I didn't even know how the game worked yet and we're already beginning evacuation, panic set in! This must've been their intent because thankfully a tutorial window popped up that helped me to figure out where to send my crew before we left the station
You can select to view each room(Cockpit, Ship interior, Cargo area, station halls) and click the crewmen on the top left and put them into action
I sent my crew to refill on fuel and gather cargo and sent somebody to fix the hyperdrive which all sounds pretty technical but all I did was click on the crewmen and select the option from the dropdown menu and watch the timer on their nameplate go down
After a bit my crew members started getting assaulted by citizens of the space station trying to get aboard the ship and taking damage and I just decided to launch my starship from the station with 4 pieces of cargo, my crew and zero passengers. I am playing a space colony game and I have zero colonists! That is like playing civilization and your first settlers get taken away by barbarians. Once I got over my huge mistake I now saw the navigation menu on how to travel, scan, and eventually land my ship on whatever planet I found, I located an ice planet with no vegetation and temperatures in the negatives. I decided to land and end my game there.
My failure aside I was impressed with the game and I cannot wait for when it gets out of early alpha and some more features become available. I wonder how it'll involve other players besides the marketplace as you can add friends and join a squad together or join a guild (Alliances) but we'll see! I would appreciate any hints or tips from other players of Exode if you have any.
Thank you for reading I hope you enjoyed it.
