Not far from Wat Maha That, there is a very small temple, Wat Nok. Its not part of Wat Maha That, but another temple, a relic from the ancient Ayutthaya kingdom. It's uncertain how long ago it built, as there are no trace or signs, but it was built during the reign of Thammaracha.
This temple is very small compared to Wat Maha That, but it has one evocative aspect. The building is nearly gone, with only the wall remasis. Clearly, this is a very long stand structure, perhaps hundreds of years old.
The temple still has its foundations, so we can see the pillars, which are at risk of collapse if not maintained. However, what I do remember most clearly is that this temple had a very large sermon hall and a statue of Buddha seated in the Taming Mara pose on the altar. The statue clearly lacks a head.
In conclusion, this temple appear to still retain traces of the Khmer style, make it one of the temples from the late Ayutthaya period. Unfortunately, this temple is not a favorite for visitors it cause it's very small and has almost no interesting story. However, it was the headless Buddha statue that really intrigued me.
This is a sacred place, especially the headless Buddha statue, so respect must be shown to everything at Wat Nok. However, if you feel the atmosphere at Wat Nok, you understand how sacred it is. Is it because the Buddha statue seems to have a soul? I felt as if I were seeing someone praying on the altar, without any obstructions, looking directly up to the sky.
Although the plaster on the walls has eroded from weather and time, I could sense that Wat Nok has very beautiful architecture. Carvings like these aren't found at Wat Maha That, so I suspect that although Wat Nok is small, it has its own architectural value.
You can reach Wat Nok in one walk. It's not too far from Wat Maha That, only about 20 till 50 meter walk. Locate in the western area of Ayutthaya Historical Park, you'll find it here. Since each temple is surrounded by trees, it provides shade and coolness. It's a great journey to visit Wat Nok and witness the headless Buddha meditating.
