It's another dead end! We are lost! Rick shouted to his companions.
What do we do now? Briss asked. Our cellphones can't pick up any signal and this underground route is like a catacomb, he added.
I told you guys to forget about this hike but you you wouldn't listen, now we are sitting ducks in the middle of nowhere! Rick blew hot.
Calm down! Moss cautioned him. Now is not the time for blames, lets put heads together and find a way out of this puzzle.
Puzzle? You say puzzle? We are in a living grave man! We are no more living! Rick shouted.
Its okay guys! I think i have a plan. Lets try it out and see what comes out of it, alright? Briss offered.
Alright. Moss and Rick replied in unison.
They had decided to go out hiking out on the mountain range as they always do after a light snow. They had hike for about two hours when they came across a hole, like a doorway on the side of a hill. Moss asked them to go in and see what it looks like below but Rick had countered him and advice they focus on hiking on the mountain top and then go home.
We are here to hike, not digging for archaeology he had said.
After a little more pressure, they agreed to just take a few minutes peep and come out but hours after their descent, they still can't find a way out.
They all sat down and having each taken a sip of water from their limited supply, they crowded together to hear what Briss had to say.
Here is the plan. I don't know how much longer this hell hole goes round but i believe it must have an exit, right? Now, the exit may be one or two or as many as it is but it must still have. We will tie one end of this staff here with a torn clothe and light it up, then we hold it out to see which way the wind blows it, wind blows inward, not outward so with that we know which way to head, is that okay? Briss inquired.
Nice point Bro! Moss said. Lets give it a try. Better than doing nothing or walking without a plan.
They took a staff and Moss volunteered one of his clothe. Rick tied it tightly round one of the staff and they set it alight. At first, the breeze played on the flame forcing it in multiple directions but gradually it got stable and was burning with it smoke going vertically upward.
Now what? Rick asked.
Calm down man, you are always in a hurry Moss countered.
You just shut up! You dragged us into this mess, remember? Rick shot back. I wonder who goes hiking underground! He added.
I did not force you to come along, loud mouth! Moss fired back.
You say what? Rick asked in between clinched teeth at the same time dropping the light and making towards Moss with his fists tightly closed, ready to offer a punch.
Stop this please! Briss said at the same time coming in between them to prevent a fight.
Let's save the punches for the darkness wrestling us, okay. Briss added.
This is not over man! Rick said.
Now, when we set the clothe alight, the wind blew it almost in all directions but the breeze from the direction of that tunnel, Briss pointed the beam of his flashlight at the tunnel to the left, the breeze coming from that direction was stronger, we take that way, he offered.
They followed the tunnel for almost half an hour, then it branched into two. Moss lit the clothe again and this time, the breeze blew it to one direction alone, to the right. They took it and it ran for almost half a mile then it rose upward. They kept walking until they had to go crawling up on all fours.
Hey! Look! Moss said flashing his light to the right of the cave-like tunnel. What light is that, or am i losing my sanity?
It looks like a star to me! Moss replied.
What do you say Rick? Briss asked.
Don't know. Lets go further up but the air seems abundant and fresher here, Rick replied.
They climbed up through the tunnel keeping to their right.
Oh! Goodness! Moss exclaimed. They are stars!
