Tonight, we escaped from the kids, and took an adventure to the cinema.
Holy smokes.
I saw the trailer when it first came out and thought it looked dark as hell and super gritty.
I sort of forgot about it, for a good while.
I got the immediate impression of the tone being a pinch of Taxi Driver, meets Fight Club, meets Falling Down.
And then lately, it came to the cinemas and it was all anyone talked about.
So I said to my wife @radicalpears that if there’s one film we need to actively make an effort to go an see at the cinema (rather than a DVD) before it goes out of circulation, it’s Joker.
We watched it in an almost empty cinema.
It was incredible.
It was a true stripped back ‘film experience’ in the best way.
It was no-frills brilliant story telling, with long held shots, limited use of music, utterly moving performances, with constant suspense and the rare dash of action, and splash of very dark comedy.
THIS is filmmaking.
I want to go and see it again.
