In today’s world, self-realization and enhancing our worth are our common goals. Specifically, because it provides us an antidote of worrying less of this recent age, that brings about different traits such as arrogance, greed, and self-centeredness. And humility is at the verge of experiencing a much-needed revival because it is simply fading away. Humility involves seeing ourselves accurately, not thinking of ourselves more higher-than in an appropriate form, irrespective of our wealth or social status.

Humility can be understood not just as a virtue but also as a psychological trait. Basically, humility as to do with the degree to which we value and promote our interests above others. It brings about truthfulness, absence of pride and the ability to be modest under all circumstances. This traits is exhibited by having a respectful behavior towards others. A humble person doesn’t think they are superior to others, neither do they think they inferior or less worthy. It’s just of their nature to put others first, they won’t seek favors in return for their support, because helping others and showing compassion comes naturally within them.

In this recent society, humility, kindness, or having a gentle behavior had often been considered old-fashioned. The hustle and bustle of our daily lives make us forget about these good traits. For example in my country Nigeria, they would say "Jeje nor dey pay" (Jeje is an act of being calm) these words literally means that the act of being calm or humble can’t earn you anything. Well, I wouldn’t blame anyone for such perspective, it’s just the society we find ourselves today, everyone striving hard to survive with the lack of trust among ourselves, the common advice we get is to be careful and keep an eye on our rivals. While self-glory, stubbornness and an I-don’t-care attitude are commonly seen as essential ways to achieving life goals. All these attributes are in contrast with the principle of humility.

Humility has nothing to do with being weak. This is an aspect I discovered when people are trying to describe a humble person. They believe that the weaker a person is, the more act of humbleness the person demonstrates, like a form of disguise so as to stay out of trouble. Having humility doesn’t have to make you timid or let others trample over you. Being humble doesn’t imply that you become subservient or fail to stand up for yourself when needed or for others who are being wronged. In other terms, humility is giving respect, earning respect and being dignified of your social behavior. It is just a calm way of expressing yourself without hostility. You don’t have to appear as a weakling because you’re humble.

Do not let arrogancy take over kindness, let’s open our hearts to love and continue with that simplest act of humility because it pays.
