Hello lovely Hivers, it’s another Friday and am grateful for that. And it happens to be my market day. I went for a quick shopping today at a local market in my area Lekki, Lagos. You know how local market can be sometimes, stressful and busy and that’s why most times what I do, I make plans ahead by creating a good time best and convenient for me. I visit the local market at least twice in a month, I buy things that will take me for a long while.
Here is my list
There’s one thing about me writing my market list and it quite funny how I write down my list and sometimes I don’t end up using it or even work outside my list and runout of my budget by buying things on impulse. Writing a market list helps us stay in line with our budget, pocket and help us economize. And also, personally I discovered that with a market list I shop faster, it helps me saves time, energy, and money.
Things here are quite expensive in my area, especially when it comes to food stuff, like it’s crazy. And trust me I can price a lot because I do buying and selling and I know how it works. Since am new to the area and I haven’t gotten a customer yet that I buy from, so I just buy anywhere am attracted to. One thing I watch out for when whenever I visit the market, is that, I look out for those happy faces and buy from them, those people I can easily relate and negotiate prices with.
First things I got was my tomatoes, pepper, onions and potatoes. I got them all in one place. I did the pricing as usual till he agrees to sell at my own rate and bought from him. He was friendly too (That’s a number 1 strategy to keep in business, for you to attract or keep customers/buyers you have to be friendly). He also persuaded me to grind my tomatoes and pepper at his place and I actually did because it was more convenient for me. He asked me if I would be needing anything he sells from my list, he wanted to take all my money LOL, but I like going round the market to compare prices so I won’t feel cheated or anything, although, I didn’t tell him these.
I went round and got the other items I needed and the last thing I got that actually took my time was buying meat. I went to the sellers table and told her the type I wanted it was quite difficult to communicate with her because she doesn’t speak English too well, she speaks Yoruba language and I am not too fluent in Yoruba. Yes! Lest I forget, one thing also that can help you get your items in a local market at good prices is to understand language. Like in Lagos, Yoruba is the most popular language and it’s easy to understand. When you communicate with most of the sellers at the market they tend to take you as "their own“ sometimes and sell well for you and that’s if you’re lucky.
Language was the only barrier I faced at the market. I was unable to communicate with their language especially with the meat seller. I bought from her because her meat were fresh but I felt I would have been able to negotiate price more with her by buying at all cheaper rate. But it was all good.
After everything at the market, on my way home I found this Date fruit and Tiger nut seller, I couldn’t resist but buy them. I like eating it a lot and it has so much benefits to human health, they contain vital contents such as high fibre, minerals and vitamins that helps boost the body immune system.
