Yes and no at the same time. While yes it plays in the canon and world of Metal Gear, it is a serious depature form the Metal Gear Solid series and should therefore be seen as a spin-off.
You are one of the soldiers who were stationed at the Motherbase after the events of Metal Gear Solid V. Somehow a wormhole opened up and you find yourself transported into a parallel universe where crystal zombie-esk creatures will hunt you and your base down. It is now your objective to defend it and find out why the wormhole opened up and how you get back into your universe.
While it sounds a little bit stretched with crystal zombies, we still talk about a universe where nanomachines controlled all weapons, could harden the skin of a person and let's people breath through there skin. So i think as far as believability goes, it fits into the universe, but also manages to leave a bitter taste in your mouth. Zombies are a bit overused in this day and age, and so are survival games.
When i'll be honest, no, not really. While they have different zombie types, from runners, to big ones that explode and armored zombies, they do not feel very distinct from any other zombie game.
But where they lack in variety and originality, they shine in gameplay. Yes it is a survival game and you basically already know what you are signing up for, food and water management, ressourcen management and all that stuff. But paired with the excellent and fluid gameplay from MGS V it creates a nice and fast paced game. And all that together with base building and friends, it creates a unique and fun game.
But that doesn't mean that MG Survive isn't without problems. Note that all of my thoughts are based on the current beta. It throws you in without a tutorial and that's a bummer. Also it does lock some basic movements behind skilltrees, which confused me because i thought you had the same movement as MGS V. So i wanted to dodge a zombie with a dive but nothing happened. It is a little frustrating that so essential skills, which i learned from the get go in MGS V weren't present here. At least not yet. Also you are not supposed to win every event from the start. In my video i failed at the second wave of the activity but did get rewards and money from it, but less compared to what i would have gotten when i had won. That leads me to think that you will have to grind at some point in this game. Also, following the trend of 2017, there will be microtransactions.
All in all it left me with some mixed feelings. While i had fun for some time, i couldn't bring myself to start the beta a second time. And i would say that if you plan on buying this, get a friend and play it with him/her together, it will be way more fun that way. But if you are curious and want to try it out, the beta runs until the 21. february and is free on XBOX One, Playstation 4 and the PC
