Guy's I had to tell you about today's find, it was awesome, something that I never knew existed in the UK and we found them on the plot.
While I was clearing some space on the back of the allotment I was showing my lad some of the insects that were found underthings.
My oldest daughter came out to see what we were doing and asked what this manhole cover was in the middle of the garden.
I explained that water had to drain from the road to the river and the waterboard put a manhole cover to stop people from falling down it.
I lifted the cover to the drain to show both my kids what was under it, we didn't know at the time but this was when our day was going to get interesting.
As I put the cover back down and took a step back I looked down to find what looked like a gecko on the floor.
I was taken back as I had never seen one before, well not outside just in a cage.
As I bent down to take a closer look that is when I saw the second one, and both of them were really still, I thought they were dead.
My kids decided to take a closer look and got me a tub to put them in so we could take a better look at them.
Now at the time, the one on the bottom of the photo was not looking too good, and I think that I or one of my kids had stood on it.
This was a pure accident as we didn't even know that these guys lived in the UK and who would even look for them?
I decided to give it a better chance and nurse it back to health, it was still alive just not in the best of ways.
I did a little research on the little creatures and they are called the common Lizard, they are found all over the UK and they mate in spring and give birth in June, which is amazing.
They don't lay eggs, they have live births which is pretty cool too, as I read more and more about them we found that they like to eat spiders and woodlice.
We decided to help the little guy who got stood on and take it in for the night.
We have a plastic tube and I filled it with compost and added a little pond with stones in so that they didn't fall in and drown.
We even found some woodlice and added them into the tube for tonight.
We want to give the little guy a chance to make it through the night so we also added his pal in there with him too.
We have come away from the plot and tomorrow we will return to see how these guys are getting along.
We are not keeping them as pets and once we know that this little guy is well enough they will be released into the plot but more at the river end, just in case. we don't want another accident, do we?
What an eventful day, it started off by clearing the ground to me turning into a vet, we love our land, and all things living on it, and that's the way we want to bring up our children too.
