You always get warning signs, in this case you'd get a distinct knocking noise. I guess these drivers aren't paying for the repairs so just ignore it. A burst water hose always looks worse than it is.

Always worth the effort and maybe an engine flush every 4/5 years would be good too, although some of those treatments are far too aggressive. Sometimes it's the grime inside the engine that holds it together
