I tried a rewatch actually since it’s only 6 eps but I think it just ends up as a visually hamfisted end product for me. I guess it’s intentional for the kind of story it’s telling but i think there’s a point where you kind of break a lot of continuity or misuse common visual staples in a way that just creates some dissonance (e.g, abuse of triple takes or camera shot changes that go against flow). I also think how it uses symbols and metaphors to drive its main story aren’t really what I like either and more so there as direct reference (the bat, what mamimi represents for Naota, Amamaro with silly eyebrows, etc). I usually prefer them to either accentuate an experience or be used as a tool for further discussion of ideas but for flcl it feels like your usual coming of age story with those symbols being there as one dimensional explicit connections to some ideas. I wish I could like this more but it ended up not hitting the mark for me.
I love pillows tho and I think even if it’s not visually my thing I appreciate some shots and the snappy kanada style animation for a few cuts even if the entire thing isn’t something I vibe with.
