The Mirror
It stares back at me—Me.
Who is this stranger?
The one in the mirror.
I feel as though we've met before, but can't place the day
or time or place.
There is a look in their eyes.
I think I know what they're feeling.
Are they mistrustful?
Are they trustworthy?
Are they someone I would want to know.
Maybe I should introduce myself.
Or perhaps I should just nod assuming that I know who they are.
I could even smile and act as though I understand their motives.
Perhaps I could—dare I? Even chuckle a little.
Oh what the hell—why not laugh out loud.
Let them know I'm not falling for anything they might have up their sleeve.
Wait a minute, maybe I'm being too judgmental.
I could fain indifference and act above it all.
Yes, I'm better than them.
They who would toy with me like this.
How could they?
After all I didn't do anything to them.
Still, maybe I should find out what they're up to.
Are they on my side?
If not—why?!
Yes, that's it. I must find out why they've come to see me.
Why they stare back at me.
Why indeed.
Isn't it obvious?
They are up to their old tricks.
They'll never learn will they?
I'll show them once and for all.
If I just do one thing. One little thing.
It will stop them in their tracks.
It will force them to give up their insidious game.
I will reach for the light switch and turn it—OFF.
There! They're powerless in the dark.
They don't exist!
They feed on the light.
And I have put them away. Away I say!
My eyes are starting to adjust to the darkness.
I think I see them. They're still staring at me.
We're all alone now. No secrets between us.
Time for all to be revealed.
We are one.
