In line with the paintings I’ve done so far, this is the last traditional media print (finally!) in the series of prints I’m to create for an art collaboration between my friends and I! What’s left is to work on the digitization of the hand painted illustrations! For this painting, I had forgotten about the mini sketches and plans I had made on what prints to create. But I guess the first hummingbird I painted set me thinking that I’d already had it in mind to paint more birds. The idea for this print was to be more free flowing, colorful and fun!
It pretty much worked out but prior to that, when testing the colors to use, I wasn’t too pleased. I realized the Van Gogh water color set wasn’t just setting right, so I ditched it for my Windsor and Newton set. The colors seemed to muddy up, rather than blend smoothly into one another. I’m hoping to try the Van Gogh again, just to see if the issue lies with me or the paint.
I’ve also included a little visualization of how the painting put into a repeat is supposed to look, hopefully you’ll stick around to see the end process of all the prints! I’m so glad it’s coming together!
PROCESS!
First I started by making a sketch of the bird. When that was done, I painted in my first wash layer ( a light coat of color), and waited for it to dry.
Next I built up my colors by applying light mixes of paint onto desired areas. For some parts, I let the colors bleed into one another.
When this was done, I let it dry a bit before reapplying paint to add details to certain areas. I repeated this same process for the other two paintings.
Then the paintings were done!
To the left is the color study and sketch I made. At the top, I tested 4 colors from both watercolor sets, it dawned on me that I might just have to stick to the Winsor & Newton paint till I figure out what the issue is with the other paint set.
So here’s a little sketch of some sort of how the final pattern may or may not look like. So stick around to see the final results!
Thank You For Viewing
Let me know which bird was your favorite :)
