While thinking of a sister bird to paint alongside the Cattle Egret for the print I’m working on, the Hummingbird came to mind! Some days back, I saw a hummingbird to my utmost surprise, usually the turtle doves, crows, hawks and the laughing doves are the predominant birds where I live. So seeing one was a pleasant surprise! I rushed in to get my camera, but I guess one can never be as fast as a hummingbird. By the time I got back, it had flown away, but seeing it that once, made my day!

PROCESS!

I started by sketching out the bird. I made some practice sketches and paintings prior to starting the bigger painting, you’ll find it at the end of this post. After the sketch I got painting! And it took a lot of patience.

The hummingbird is one unique bird with so so many colors, the reference I used was proof of that. When I looked at my color palette I realized it might be a bit difficult to get the exact colors of the bird. So I stuck to the blue, green and violet hues of the bird, and it came out well! Here’s proof!
