Over the weekend we attended my Grandmother's funeral. After the service we were going through photos found in her sister's house after she (my Great Aunt) had to be put into the nursing home. I found this photo particularly interesting. While my Grandmother is not in the photo, two of her sisters are. I am not sure which one is my Great Aunt, but she will turn 99 in May (the other sister died several years ago). The man is my maternal great, great, great Grandfather. The images is a photo of a photo that is almost 100 years old so the quality is as would be expected.
My brother mentioned that as he explores our genealogy deeper and deeper it becomes less important to him as we could be just as closely related to our neighbors. I am sure others feel differently. However, when you can hold a picture in your hand it somehow becomes almost surreal. In one way, it is more profound than your living relatives. It is part of your potential, your existence, and your mortality all at the same time. People that were, people that may not have been, people that are, people that will cease to be in this time and place.
