Stillicide

Introduction.

The beauty of Nature we can also admire in rocks and caves, and Leonardo Da Vinci, the first geologist of the modern era testifies to this in many of his famous paintings. In the 16th century Leonardo as a great scientist and artist painted rocks, ravines, gullies and caves of all shapes and types within two famous paintings, The Virgin of the Rocks and The Mona Lisa. Leonardo's geological research for the first time opened the way to the older nature whose value we appreciate today.

Journey into the earth

In 1971, 5 boys from Ancona with a passion for geology, including 3 minors, while hiking in the mountains in Genga, province of Ancona, discovered a small hole in the ground.

They noticed that an air current was coming from the hole and began to widen it. They soon noticed that the hole was actually a very deep cavity and tried to illuminate the inside to no avail. They tried to measure its depth by dropping a stone and calculating the fall time.

Over 5 seconds!

For the 5 boys the height of the cave measured more than 120 meters, actually then with modern measurements the height of the cave vault measures 240 meters, twice the prediction and is one of the highest in the world.

I visited the Frasassi caves, one of the most fascinating geological sites in the world. A wonderful place where nature continues to live inside the underground forming incredible works such as stalactites and stalagmites.

Drop by drop for a million years one of the most fascinating creations on the planet takes place. This process is called trickling, meaning that water travels through natural channels until it is deposited on the cave vault.

In the millennia-long deposit, the water forms a veil that remains in contact with the rock and takes up calcium carbonate from it, which is released in droplets. Drop by drop, the calcite is deposited in successive layers, growing by 2 millimeters every ten years and generating marvelous natural sculptures.

When the drops slide down from above they form stalactites, while their deposition on the ground forms stalagmites. Often the two karst formations meet, generating a single body similar to large columns or organ pipes.

Another bizarre form that generates water are the so-called sheet stalactites, or cloths spread out, produced by gentle air currents that over the millennia shift the verticality of the calcium carbonate as it is deposited, giving rise to real planes of calcite softly tilted by the millennial air.

I hope my post was interesting, and I look forward to attempting a watercolor on the theme.

Stillicidio

Introduzione.

Armando.
