Do you know that Kobe is the birthplace of Marathon in Japan? The above photo is the monument to show that the first marathon in Japan was held at Kobe. The monument is at the front of Kobe city office.
神戸が日本マラソン発祥の地であることをご存知でしょうか？上の写真は日本初のマラソンが神戸で開催されたことを示すモニュメントで、神戸市役所の前に建っています。
On 21st March 1909, the running race named “Big Marathon Race” was held in Kobe. The distance of the race was 31.7km, so it was not a full marathon. But it was the first race whose name included the word “marathon” in Japan. So the race is considered the first marathon in Japan.
1909年（明治42年）3月21日、「マラソン大競争」という名のレースが神戸で開催されました。距離は31.7kmだったので、フルマラソンではありません。しかし、日本で初めて「マラソン」と名付けられたレースだったので、 このレースが日本初のマラソンと認識されています。
Today I got off work in early afternoon, then I made a side trip to this monument on my way home. I swore to do my best in the full marathon on 3rd December and prayed for a good result in the race in the face of the monument.
今日は昼過ぎまでの勤務だったので、帰り道に少し寄り道してこのモニュメントに立ち寄りました。モニュメントを前にして、12月3日のフルマラソンで全力を尽くすことを誓い、よい結果を残せるよう祈りました。
