I stopped going to the psychologist some time ago. I started going a little over a year ago but since I was a teenager I had always wanted to go, I just had no way to pay for it and for my parents it was unnecessary. Last year, due to some bad circumstances I ended up going, almost forced, to a psychologist in a hospital. I had to go at six o'clock in the morning if I wanted to be seen in the middle of the morning and sometimes I couldn't even see him. However, after going a couple of times I took her number and started seeing her in paid sessions in her office.
She helped me learn about myself, especially because after several sessions she told me something that remains in my head to this day: have you ever been seen for a diagnosis of autism? I had never thought about it, but the more I pondered it in my mind and in my memories, the more it made sense. -It's nothing to worry about, if you hadn't noticed it yet, then it means it's not very serious, in fact, I know it's not very serious,” he told me. It made sense to me, and it helped because more than a diagnosis (which came later), it was an answer.
I always found it hard to talk to women, and well, with men it's not that I found it hard to talk, but I always found it hard to understand their behavior. Although I have talked to many people, I like to be alone and in environments with many people I suffer from a lot of anxiety, anxiety that until recently I thought was normal and I “controlled” it with alcohol or nicotine. Now I understand that it is not normal to feel the way I feel, but that does not mean it is bad, it is just part of me and saying it out loud, although at first it was difficult, now it is very comforting
On the subject of women, I was always in a group of friends and I wondered how it was that my friends managed to flirt, how they could talk with that double entendre so naturally. I remember several times in my life when a woman came up to me and I couldn't shut up, I could never read the mood and that sometimes they found it cute and sometimes they disliked it, but they always, at least, realized it was weird. I spent several nights wondering why, and now, happily, I know.
At work I wonder who notices. I guess they know I must have something, I'm sure it shows, but, as I thought before, they might think I'm just clumsy and that's it, or that I've been raised in a peculiar way. I thought that because I know my relationship with my parents is not the most common, but thinking about what made me cry as a child, how I behaved and how I behave, what I like and how I express it, it is so obvious to me to be “on the spectrum” that it even makes me feel bad that I had never imagined it.
Saying it, again, is something that reassures me. I don't use it as an excuse, but I certainly use it for people to understand, for me to understand me, and that's why I wanted to write about it, because it's part of me, however small it is, it's me.
