I've always loved history, trivia, and all that. In fact, I'm so curious that I'm always researching things, and that's how my YouTube channel, "Samira History," was born. However, lately, I've been incredibly curious to discover things about the past of my own surroundings, the city where I live, Valencia (in Venezuela). When I walked through the historic center, I couldn't stop wondering what it looked like many years ago, and wow! What a surprise I got when I started researching historical facts, even finding photographic material that helped me get a better understanding. So, I set out to visit each of the places that seemed most emblematic and with an interesting history. That day, I toured with my mom while I told her all these details, and now I'd like to share them with you. Vaya sorpresa la que me llevé cuando empecé a investigar datos históricos, encontrando incluso material fotográfico que me ayudaron a tener un mejor contexto, así que me di a la tarea de visitar cada uno de los lugares que me parecieron más emblemáticos y con una historia interesante. Ese día hice el recorrido junto con mi mamá mientras yo le iba contando todos estos datos, y ahora me gustaría compartirlos con ustedes, así que súbanse a la máquina del tiempo y acompáñenme en esta aventura de turismo histórico.

That wall you see in the background with a beautiful mural depicting part of Venezuela's history is now a police station located in the heart of Valencia's historic center, across from Plaza Bolívar. But you won't believe what was there before...

This was the Town Hall, a stately two-story mansion with multiple balconies, dating back to colonial times. It served as the city hall during both the colonial and republican eras. As I understand it, in the 1920s, during the oil boom when the country was captivated by the promise of progress, they wanted to give the building a facelift. So, under the administration of then-President (dictator) Juan Vicente Gómez, the building was demolished—some say completely, others only partially. The Municipal Palace was then built on the site, which was also demolished in the 1970s to give the city a more "modern" feel. However, since they could never agree on what to build there next, it became a parking lot and is now a police station.

Walking north through Plaza Bolívar before reaching Avenida Cedeño, the city still preserves a vestige of that building constructed in 1928. The architect in charge of the City Hall project built his house as a kind of "replica" of the building; it's not exactly the same, but it's quite similar. Currently, it functions as a women's clothing and lingerie store. It's a little sad to see that it wasn't designated as a museum, but at least it's gratifying to see that they respected its facade and that it retains many elements from that era, including the sign that reads "Edificio Márquez 1928."

Right in the middle of Plaza Bolívar, on one of the corners, we have the Victoria Tower, a small and colorful building that currently goes completely unnoticed, it doesn't attract attention at all, some of its letters are even falling off, but at one time it was the most modern and tallest in the city, however, would you believe me if I told you that there, before the construction of that building, there was once a majestic five-star hotel called the Hotel Alemán?

According to the Facebook page "Venezuela y sus recuerdos" (I recommend visiting it if you love history as much as I do), the majestic Hotel San Rafael once stood there, later renamed Hotel Alemán and finally Hotel Victoria (which gave the current building its name). The hotel was very exclusive and hosted many renowned figures of its time; it's even said to have housed two spies from World War II (though this is speculation, nothing concrete, but still interesting 😁). But, again, the people of Valencia at that time (1969) were obsessed with giving the city a more modern look 🙄 so they ended up demolishing the building to construct the tower we have now. How disappointing, right? It's supposed to be the historic center; it doesn't have to look modern.

And finally, (for now) I bring you the most shocking story. This building you see behind me is currently a modern clothing store called Mundo Total (although it retains its original facade). You can even see me inside the store, surrounded by various items. I myself have shopped at that store several times, and even at that moment I was with my mom choosing gifts for my dad's birthday. But many of those customers who were there with us, as well as the workers and even the owners, are possibly unaware of the grim history hidden there, what happened in colonial times in that same place when it was the home of the Malpica family.

In 1814, Venezuela was in the midst of its war of independence. José Tomás Boves, a leader of the royalist army, hated Simón Bolívar for being a "mantuano," a member of the Venezuelan aristocracy at the time. Boves wanted to reconquer Valencia (which Bolívar had already liberated). To do this, he besieged the city, surrounding it on all sides and cutting off its resources. Sooner or later, the population surrendered, and it is said that Boves swore to respect the rights of all citizens. But to celebrate his victory, he wanted to throw a ball, and he did so at the home of one of the richest men in the city, nicknamed "The Swiss" Malpica (the current store). The Valencian bourgeoisie were forcibly invited to this event, and at a certain point, Boves ordered his musicians to play a Joropo (traditional Venezuelan music) called "El Piquirico." To its rhythm, he forced the ladies to dance with members of his army (Boves's army) while he murdered the gentlemen. Afterward, the ladies were raped and killed. However, there are many versions of this event. Some say that only a few gentlemen on a list were killed, and others say that the massacre took place at another house, not that one.

Pero para celebrar la victoria quiso ofrecer un baile, y lo hizo en la casa de uno de los hombres más ricos de la ciudad a quién apodaban: “El Suizo” Malpica (la actual tienda) a ese evento fue invitada forzosamente la burguesía valenciana, y en determinado momento Boves ordenó a sus músicos tocar un Joropo (música típica venezolana) llamado "El Piquirico" y a su ritmo obligó a las damas a bailar con los miembros de su ejército (de Boves) mientras asesinaba a los caballeros, posteriormente ultrajaron a las damas y les dieron muerte.
