Are Sorrow and Happiness Entwined?

Happiness usually originates from overcoming suffering and a low point in your life.

Happiness and sadness are like the yin and yang of each other. Wikipedia says: "In Chinese philosophy, yin and yang describe how seemingly opposite or contrary forces may actually be complementary, interconnected, and interdependent in the natural world." This sounds very similar to happiness and sadness, they are the opposite of each other, but one cannot survive without the other.

Some may say, to be happy, you must have felt sad beforehand. You can't be overly happy or sad, both emotions exist in harmony, fluctuating backwards and forwards like a cosine wave. You cannot put somebody in such a state in which they are indefinitely happy nor sad. Humans go through a rollercoaster of sentiments every day, swinging between being in a positive mood and a negative mood.

Happiness Can Survive Without Sorrow

Now, I'll take a look at the situation from another viewpoint. If we somehow happened to state, we can be happy without feeling sorrow, at that point that, it might be because bliss is a natural response to what satisfies us. We don't figure out how to be happy, and we don't realise what bliss is, we only experience it.

I figure that if you require one without the other and if we base our judgement on the fact we live in a world of duality, at that point, would you need to know what cold feels like to feel the scorching heat on your hands? I believe that the experience of suffering makes one appreciate the moments of his happiness more, yet in no way, shape or form do we consequently stop being able to grasp what satisfaction is because sadness is no longer present. It goes about as a way to enchant a moment of serenity. However, we needn't bother with despair to be content.

With everything taken into account, if we look at it from this viewpoint, we are creating a deeper level of happiness. I feel that joy has been decreased to a trite and to direct understanding of something that is much more complex than we understand.
