The Champion Ladder Is a Volume Race: Why Plus-or-Minus 20 Changes Everything

Most of us learned Splinterlands rating the usual way: beat a stronger player and you gain more, lose to a weaker one and it hurts more. At the very top of the Wild ladder, that stops being true.

Twenty points, every time

As Splinterlands announced, above 4000 rating every Wild ranked battle moves both players by exactly 20 points, whoever the opponent is. Beating someone at 4100 earns the same 20 as beating someone at 5500. It sounds like a small rule change, but it rewrites how the top of the ladder works.

Champions also start each new season at 3800, so a player's final rating comes down to one line:

final rating ≈ 3800 + 20 × (wins − losses)

The leaderboard doesn't reward win rate, and it doesn't reward who you beat. It rewards net wins.

Win rate × volume

Net wins are your number of battles times how far your win rate sits above 50%:

battles in the seasonwin ratenet winsfinal rating
30060%+605,000
60055%+605,000
1,00055%+1005,800
1,40058%+2248,280

A 55% player who plays twice as much ties a 60% player. Last season's top finisher played over 1,400 battles at about 58%; a 5,900 finish was enough for tenth place, about 105 net wins.

Energy is the real currency

If volume decides the race, energy decides volume. Every ranked battle costs one energy, and the bar regenerates about one point an hour up to a cap of 50. That is roughly 24 battles a day on regeneration alone.

The players at the top find energy elsewhere:

  • Chest energy stacks above the cap. Season reward chests and Glint shop loot chests can push you well past 50, so nothing is lost while you are away.
  • Glint loot chests are the steady source. Major chests work out the best value, at roughly 9,000 GLINT per point of energy; their price rises after the first 150 in a season.
  • Don't sit at 50. Energy that would regenerate onto a full bar is gone for good, so a full bar is wasted battles.

What it means for you

  1. At Champion, don't chase win rate alone. A slightly lower win rate over many more battles usually finishes higher.
  2. Never let your energy sit full. Play it down, or let a bot do it.
  3. Your opponent's rating barely matters above 4000. Queue whenever you have energy.
  4. Below 50% win rate, volume works against you. Every battle costs 20 expected points. Fix the teams first, then add volume.

Archmage plays accounts on exactly these rules. It burns energy instead of letting the bar sit full, claims season chests the moment a new season opens, and can turn your GLINT into energy if you switch that on. You can see the settings at archmage.app.
