The two-week marathon from Christmas on December 25 to Christmas on January 07 is coming to an end.
What's the matter? Why is there 2 Christmas?
The Julian and Gregorian calendars are to blame.
Five local Orthodox churches-Russian, Serbian, Jerusalem, Polish and Georgian, as well as Athos monasteries, Eastern rite Catholics and some Protestants live on the Julian calendar and celebrate Christmas on the night of January 6 to 7.
Little history.
The decision to celebrate the Nativity of Christ Was made at the Ephesus (Third Ecumenical) Church Council in 431.
Pope Julius I approved December 25 as the date of Christmas, and representatives of many faiths celebrate it on this day.
One of the main Christian holidays — Christmas — is celebrated on the night of December 24-25 by Catholics, Protestants, and 10 of the 15 local Orthodox churches in the world. On this day, Christians remember the birth (incarnation) of the son of God — Jesus Christ, which occurred 20 years ago in Bethlehem (Palestine).
In addition to the Roman Catholic Church on December 25, Christmas is celebrated by Protestants: Lutherans, Anglicans, some Methodists, Baptists and Pentecostals-all of them adhere to the Gregorian calendar.
I've seen people celebrate Christmas in Italy, Spain. This is a very fun holiday in these countries. In Russia, people celebrate the New Year, but people do not know how to celebrate Christmas. During the Soviet Union, the celebration of Christmas was forbidden. It was an ordinary day's work. Christmas in Russia became a holiday in 1991.
Or maybe they just get tired of celebrating the New Year and they do not have enough strength for Christmas.
Today I went with my daughter to the city center on Cathedral Square to look at people, at the Christmas tree already.
The daughter broke her arm on December 11 and almost does not leave the house all these days. I thought she should take a little walk.
We didn't see anything interesting on the square. However, some Cossacks came from the regional center and promoted their love for God. But it all looked very ridiculous and stupid. Children rode on the slides, accompanied by young mothers and fathers.
I decided to make a small photo shoot of my daughter and the Cathedral square of our town. My wife asked me to take a picture of my daughter.
The day was overcast, the sun did not break through the clouds, but it was very nice outside. It was snowing lightly and it was warm enough for a walk.
I thought I'd see a lot more sculptures in the Square. But they were few.
After the Square, I decided to walk with my daughter along the Embankment. The walk was short. She didn't wear a scarf or take her gloves with her. She got cold and we went home.
But my neighbor decided to change the roof of his old house at Christmas. When I found free time. He works as a watchman, so he came home for the holidays. And the roof of his house collapsed in 2017.
This once again shows that many people in Russia do not consider Christmas a holiday. and use it as just a day off.
This year we have a weekend until January 9.
But I went to work from January 3 to January 6. And today I decided to be at home with my family.
