I remember using yahoo as a little kid. I would click on all the sections they had and work my way through.
When I first saw google I thought it was dumb and would never take over. There were no sections that one could click through. Even the search results seemed inferior.
but I was a young and curious kid with infinite time for clicking around, Google wasn't optimized for me, it was optimized for the masses. Ain't nobody got time to click through 20 sections and see a ton of clutter, they want simplicity.
Regarding how things will evolve: I think there is a lot of wisdom in what Elon Musk considers to be on of his laws: the most entertaining outcome is the most likely one.
This goes back to a book written by Robert Gordon, The Rise and Fall of American Growth.
Gordon stated that we basically already have all the essentials (food, shelter, healthcare), the only thing left to provide is entertainment. It only makes sense that the future currency will not just be technologically superior, it will also be entertaining. Communism provides colorless widgets, the market provides both art & science. Nike isn't just about performance, it's also about design.
