From a remote place in my imagination
Dear, old and grumpy colonel
City.
Fraternal, remembered and dear friend, you will surely be surprised, when the man carrying the bundle full of letters from the port, tells you that you have received a missive.
This is not to inform you that you have finally been assigned your deserved and long awaited pension, nor to erase your hopes, saying that the list where you think you are, was long ago thrown into the waves of the Magdalena.
I write these lines to thank you, that in my distant adolescence you were a light that made me dream, you made me differentiate between oblivion and hypocrisy, with you I learned that justice and injustice are two blind old women, who go hand in hand with those who are most convenient to them.
You, long and wrapped in your parchment skin, sad and rickety, with your wife so dry and suffocated with her centennial cough, there I imagine you, in that sweaty town, where October does not end, so that the whirlpool of your viscera calms down.
There tied to the leg of a table, the rooster, innocent that his name is hope and tragedy, there haunts the ghost of your dead son, defeated by passions and betrayals, there some innocent glances look at the bird, without thinking that the roosters are worn out from looking at them.
Tick tock, tick tock, my colonel, the clock warns, wrap it in the dirty canvas of forgetfulness, take it in procession that someone will give you some coins for it, don't hide your shame colonel, know that in this world no one dies of shame, but of hunger.
Many of us have wanted to write to you, not the letter that never arrived, we just want you to know that this is the time for justice to be done, yes I know, I wrote to you a while ago about the old blind women, but my friend, my mother used to say that we should not allow a hope to die.
Your compadre Sabas, dry of soul and body, is the sign of those who sell themselves to the demons forgetting others, my dear friend you trusted, you believed that waiting, the others would remember you, crass mistake my friend, this world belongs to the one who arrives first.
I don't know if this letter will ever reach your hands, maybe at this hour, you and your wife are sleeping peacefully in the town cemetery, your patent leather shoes and your frayed umbrella may have gone to the bottom of oblivion.
But if you still have breath left to go to the port every Thursday, I want you to know that this is a shout with which I thank you for having taught me more than just how to read novels.
No more boiling stones to deceive hunger, no more dresses made of so many scraps to look like a parrot, no more rain to rust the bones.
The watch and the painting have been sold, perhaps they were used to buy shrouds, or crumbs of corn, crumbs of poverty.
Your phrases, your last phrases, as a lapidary stigma of this brown America, more than 40 years and they rumble in the drum of my brain.
Colonel, my dear colonel, today you have someone to write to you, even if dark, cold and stormy days come, you will always show your silhouette that breaks the old Caribbean walls.
Don't answer your wife, she may only be an echo of silences, answer the question of the dispossessed of the earth...
"... And meanwhile what do we eat? ..." let it be your voice, let it be the voice of the colonel, let it be the voice of my friend, where the answer comes from.
See you soon my friend.
Someone who does not forget you.
