It's been over 3 months since I got sucked into Splinterlands and a fun diversion and learning experience it has been with compelling and creative gameplay for reasons well-explained by @erzagal's excellent article on card game metas and bots.
That said, the new player experience is probably more expensive and challenging than it should be to attract new players and novice / bronze league can get boring and repetitive with limited best-in-slot play and card options (especially so in Modern) - this is an open challenge for the design team to bring more new players into the fold!
In any case, this week's share your battle highlight focuses on Tenyii Striker, a solid 5 mana Sneak melee (attacks the first available backline enemy, skipping camouflaged creatures) that gains Dodge (increased chance to dodge melee or ranged) at level 4 and Backfire (deals damage when a strike misses Tenyii, nice synergy with Dodge). Tenyii's primary vulnerability is magic attack which never misses, and Thorns to a lesser degree due to his reasonably high health.
In Bronze and Silver League where I usually lurk with my flip-a-coin winrate Tenyii Striker is a staple for when Fire is advantageous and there is enough mana.
This particular battle is from my very first Fisher-Price Diamond Tournament - I decided to burn some DEC to see what it was like playing with maxed cards. This is a big jump from Silver League as there are often 1-2 abilities added to each creature. I'd often end up going to the timer on every matchup with omg panic clicks at the end working to figure out optimal formations with the new abilities. It was too expensive to rent all the splinters so I went with the cheapest maxed summoners I could find on the rental market which ended up being Tarsa and Sloan and then rented a few maxed cards that I thought might help me at least get into the top 128 for an improved SPS payout. For more guidance on how to optimally rent using PeakMonsters see their official guide (that said, I hope they'll implement quick League filters that automatically set the levels to the max for each League e.g., 1/2/2/3 for Bronze, 2/3/4/5 for Silver etc. nudge @peak-monsters).
In any case, here was the starting lineup with a Weak Magic + Reverse Speed ruleset:
The first thing to notice is that the opponent used Quix, which decreases speed and ranged attack - but in this case, the speed debuff is actually a buff as it makes all of my creatures 1 speed faster if they had higher than 1 speed. That said, they still had some solid dragon creatures, especially the maxed Chaos Dragon which brings the pain with huge stats, Flying, Scattershot, Blast, and Blind which makes for a nasty package in high mana battles and wreaks havoc on melee/ranged units. If they'd picked a different dragon summoner this battle may have gone very differently but playing with maxed cards is so expensive that you gotta choose your cards carefully.
I was glad to have picked up a maxed Grum who burninates the Reverse Speed ruleset as well as the other supporting creatures. In the first round you can see the Tenyii hit the backmost Desert Dragon, get retaliated, dodge the retaliate, and then backfire it but got nullified for the rest of the rounds by the Chaos Dragon's Blind and this battle snowballed quickly due to my maxed cards vs their not-so-maxed cards and some luck on the Chaos Dragon scattershot. Grum probably would have taken the cake here regardless with Bloodlust, Void Armor, Void, and Giant Killer vs the Chaos Dragon.
