Lichess app allows you to send message to other players even when you are not playing. To do this, click the "compose message" when you open a players profile.
Proposal
There should be a notification that indicates that there is a new message. This notification should be attached to the top left navigation button.

Benefits
This will help players communicate better and help players reply faster to messages especially when it is urgent.
