Greetings, everyone... welcome to my blog. I invite you to enjoy this dark tale inspired by Halloween.
The Curse of the Catrina
It was the 1980s. Every year, the local youth eagerly awaited the Halloween party hosted by the town club, a chance to show off their costumes. It was customary to wrap up the festivities with a contest, awarding a prize for the most original costume.
Khenya almost always won, as her parents had the means to buy her exclusive outfits—pieces designed by professionals in the world of high fashion. She loved to flaunt these costumes, just as she loved to show off her family’s wealth. To be honest, she was quite insufferable and arrogant.
The other kids in the group had to make do with improvised costumes—witches, ghosts, mummies, or masks of clowns and monsters—paired with makeup they applied themselves.
That year, Khenya wasn’t satisfied with what her parents offered her. She wanted something even more striking—something that would instill fear and send shivers down people’s spines the moment she arrived—all to ensure she’d win the prize once again. It wasn’t about the cash prize; she didn’t need the money. Her drive to win stemmed from an intense, competitive nature. A few days earlier, she had read a newspaper advertisement about a professional makeup artist who specialized in creating horror-themed looks. It caught her interest, so she immediately booked an appointment for the day of the party.
When her friends asked what costume she planned to wear to the party, she replied with her characteristically smug tone:
"Why do you want to know? So you can copy me? It’s a surprise! Just wait until I arrive tonight—you’ll all be left absolutely stunned. It will be the most realistic costume you’ve ever seen in your lives."
As if her own words had sealed her fate, she headed to her appointment. Upon her arrival, a very strange-looking man opened the door and ushered her inside. He told her she was the only client he would be seeing at that hour, as he didn't like to be disturbed while he worked.
He led her into a room and instructed her to lie down on a daybed. Though she felt a bit uneasy, the excitement of showing off her makeup that night made her push that feeling aside. She explained to the makeup artist that she wanted a Catrina—a skull-style look—and insisted that it be both terrifying and incredibly realistic.
The man nodded and offered her a refreshing drink, which she quickly consumed. Almost immediately, she began to feel extremely drowsy. Once she had fallen completely asleep, the individual began the process of creating the requested catrina look on Khenya’s face. However, he did not use ordinary makeup; instead, he applied substances that burned her skin, leaving it raw and exposed. Over this damaged flesh, he layered peculiar pigments that bonded to her skin, transforming her face into that of a ghastly skull.
The party was already underway, and inside the venue, the others were asking about Khenya. No one had seen her all day, and they found it strange that she hadn’t arrived yet. Suddenly, one of the girls shouted from outside, reporting that a terrifying woman—dressed in a black gown and wearing a skull mask—was lying on the grass at the club’s entrance.
It was Khenya, though no one realized it until she woke from the anesthesia the makeup artist had administered. She began to scream in agony, clutching at her face. She tried to remove the makeup, but it was impossible; it had become fused to her skin. The harrowing screams drew everyone outside, though no one understood what was happening. As they tried to help her, she fainted, and they noticed trickles of blood running down her neck from her face. Confused and alarmed, they rushed her to the hospital.
Her parents arrived as soon as they were notified, and her friends accompanied her as well. Upon examining her, the doctors explained that a strange tattooing process had been performed on her burned skin, using unknown pigments that were impossible to remove. They stated that there was nothing they could do for her, and, painfully, she would be left with that image on her face.
The young woman spent several days sedated; upon waking, she had to accept her fate—to carry that skull on her face for the rest of her life.
