Experts from Oxford University asked 846 volunteers to fill out questionnaires about sleep quality, the nature of dreams and lifestyle. In particular, scientists were interested in testing whether study participants stress how long they sleep, drink alcohol.

Quite predictable was the fact that anxiety about the future or being in a disturbing situation was clear prerequisites to bad dreams. The researchers suggest that the anxiety before sleep and constant daily worries lead to nightmares. It turned out that this is not the only cause of the terrible dreams.

People who slept more than 9 hours a day, also was in the thrall of nightmares. Prolonged sleep increases the amount of REM sleep (called REM phase), characterized by increased brain activity and rapid movement of the eyeballs. It is in these moments the person often has nightmares.

While alcohol use and physical activity before going to bed were not associated with nightmares. For scientists, it also became rather an unexpected result, since it is accepted that alcohol increases the amount of REM sleep in the second half of the night.
