Another one of the Los Blancos makes it into the World XI defence category, Raphael Varane. The twenty five year old Frenchman has come under much criticism however alongside Sergio Ramos adds a whole new level of pressure at the back of Madrid's defence.
There are many defenders who could contend Varane, however, none of them are nearly as pacy as the Frenchman who has been dubbed year in year out "fastest defender alive". Varane also uses his height to demonstrate some of the greatest defensive headers the whole world has ever seen. Varane definitely deserves a place on the World XI specifically for his pace and incredible defensive headers.
Honourable mentions:
- Mats Hummels is a very strong contender for this position however failed to impress me in terms of his headers.
- Oatmendi was also a strong contender for this position but is dreadfully slow, a huge restriction for the Argentine.
