Children and youthful adults greet birthdays with buoyancy, enthusiasm and excitement. The presents are bought, the parties are organised and the birthday cake is made and decorated. Who cannot feel special, loved and belonged when a fuss is made on the day of the anniversary of his/her birth?
While children/teenagers thrive with the attention and fuss each year put on by the parents and the extended family, they also get a huge boost to their self-esteem and well being.
But, what about when the kids grow up and want to make a fuss of us. Can we say no? Are we too old for birthday cake fuss?
From my perspective I say we cannot and no we are not. We are to blame, we taught them to do this. How many years did we let our kids choose a special breakfast, dinner and decorated cake? How can we turn around and not let them make a fuss of us, buy presents, make a cake, show love?
I confess that a little part of me wishes that I would if I could fade into the background, run for the hills, but they will find me I guarantee. They have their dad helping them so there is no hope of disappearing. So, they only thing to do is to woman up and enjoy my grown up kids hovering and pampering starting with a special toasted brekkie wrap and coffee for breakfast. I already feel special thinking about it.
Anyway my hubby is the resident amateur cake baker. I believe I am getting a Sewing Machine cake since I use to sew a lot when the children were young. I am definitely not too old for birthday cake! It is sure to be a fun day.
ps:I look forward to the promised Belgium chocolate dessert cake to be served later in the week just for two of us.
