The first time ever Halloween party was tackled with great fun enthusiasm by the hosts. A to do list was drawn up, invitations were issued, the food menu and nibbles arranged, prizes organised for the best costumes and the most artistically carved pumpkins and spider webs bought. The young couple thought of everything to create the best Halloween atmosphere that could be mustered in an an Australian backyard. It was an easy to do project given that websites and shops were stocked with many Halloween themed products and ideas. And there were enthusiastic friends and family to lend lots of helping hands.
The morning was a bright sunny hot day that proved just right for setting up the yard. It was a hands on action working bee day.
But, as the atmosphere developed bit by bit so did the dark clouds.
Being used to rain clouds coming and going not much thought was given to be rained out. Rain had not been forecasted so the young couple and their band of helpers continued to set up the Halloween theme. The picnic blankets were spread out, the pumpkins set up wooden tree stumps for carving and the dried out flowers added for effect. Expectations for a great night filled the air.
The time for costumed dressed guests came all too quickly, the yard was full of laugher, chatting, clinking of beer stubbies and wine glass with lots cheers.
Among the costumed guests, there was a skeleton, a business giraffe, a gothic, Freddy Kruger, a serial killer, a witch with black angel wings and tutu, a pair of Wallies.
As suddenly our party was rained upon and it was all hands on deck clearing the outside atmosphere as the thunder rumbled, the lightning flashed and the rain drops fell.
It takes more than a storm to end a party, not after all the organisation, effort and energy put into this special first every Halloween party.
And while we have never been to a Canadian, American or South African Halloween party we were happy with the overall ambience generated in our Australian backyard.
Hoping everyone had an enjoyable night on 31 October, quiet or busy. It was a hoot to have a party.

@artrywinkAlthough not a lot of pumpkins graced out Halloween night, just a token gesture. In Australia we are not blessed with the range and huge number of wonderful artistic pumpkins and gourds that I have seen stacked in mountainous mounds in Canada and the US.
Got to love this little butternut pumpkin all dressed up with his hat and sweet little face.
