A year ago, I made a decision that seemed simple at first, but ended up becoming one of the most meaningful changes in my life: I went back to the gym.
It wasn't my first time working out. Back in 2016, exercising had already been part of my routine, but little by little I stopped until it completely disappeared from my daily life. For years, I kept telling myself that I would eventually return, but there was always another priority, another excuse, or simply the feeling that "someday" would be the right time.
That day finally came a year ago.
This time, I didn't return with the goal of achieving the perfect body or chasing unrealistic beauty standards. Of course, like anyone else, I have physical goals too: getting stronger, gaining a little weight, lifting heavier, and improving my performance. But from the very beginning, my main purpose was much simpler—and much more important: taking care of my health and building a habit that I could actually sustain.
Today, I can proudly say that I did it.
Over the past year, I've learned that going to the gym is about so much more than lifting weights. It's been an opportunity to discover what my body is capable of when I give it the chance to move.
One of the things I appreciate most about my gym is the variety of activities it offers. Besides strength training, I joined yoga classes, stretching sessions, BodyCombat, and even dance fitness classes. Each one taught me something different. Some helped me build strength, others improved my flexibility, and some simply gave me an hour to disconnect from everyday stress and enjoy moving my body.
I think that's what made this journey enjoyable and sustainable. Working out never felt like a punishment or an obligation. Little by little, it became something I genuinely looked forward to.
If I had to choose my biggest achievement this year, it wouldn't be the amount of weight I can lift or the physical changes I've noticed.
My greatest accomplishment has been consistency.
Showing up even on the days when I didn't feel like it. Understanding that progress isn't built overnight, but through countless small decisions repeated over and over again.
I've also discovered how much exercise has improved my mental well-being. After a difficult day, going to the gym became a way to clear my mind, release stress, and remind myself that taking care of myself is always worth the effort.
Today, the gym is no longer just another activity on my schedule. It's become part of my lifestyle.
Looking back, I realize the biggest transformation didn't happen in my body—it happened in the way I relate to myself. I learned that lasting habits aren't built through perfection, but through consistency. And no matter how many times we've left something behind in the past, we can always choose to begin again.
This first year is only one chapter, but it's also proof that the best decisions are the ones we make with our long-term well-being in mind.
I hope that years from now, I'll come back to this post and remember that everything started with one simple decision: to move again and never give up on myself.
Because in the end, the heaviest thing I've lifted this year wasn't a dumbbell—it was my belief in myself once again.
