No, assignments happen on individual options and the concern with spreads is that it only affects one leg. In general if an option is in the money and goes to expiration it will be assigned. Now, there are exceptions and I have had options in the money expire and not be assigned....you have to check when they expire. I think the bigger problem is EARLY assignment. With American style options, they can be assigned anytime after they are bought and up to expiration. I do the wheel strategy and have had several early assignments. I am up at 0400 checking to see if I had any over night. I have some CSPs that are in the money that I need to decide whether I am going to roll them out or let them be assigned.
