Greetings to my friends at
@fulldeportes. A couple of days ago, I shared a pre-season post highlighting the remarkable feat achieved by Navegantes del Magallanes during the last campaign. Today, however, I want to discuss the eternal rivals of Venezuelan baseball and how the two teams have battled it out in their head-to-head series over the past five years.
When talking about Caracas and Magallanes, it is hard to set emotions aside, as this rivalry goes far beyond the outcome of the most recent game. Yet, if we look at the numbers from the last five seasons—spanning from 2021-22 to 2025-26—an interesting story emerges: the Leones have won more games overall, though the "Nave" has managed to regain ground after enduring two particularly difficult campaigns against their arch-rivals.
Looking at it season by season, the 2021-22 campaign began with Magallanes holding the upper hand, as they won the head-to-head series 5-2. Then came the counter-punch from the Melenudos: in 2022-23, they won 6-2, and in 2023-24, they practically steamrolled "the Ship" with a resounding 7-1 record. That is precisely where we should pause, because we aren't talking about a narrow margin; rather, these were two consecutive seasons where Caracas found a way to clearly dominate their head-to-head matchups, bringing moments of joy to their fans.
However, Magallanes didn't just stand by and watch their rival take control of the matchup. In the 2024-25 season, the series ended in a four-win tie, and in 2025-26, the Turcos took another step forward by winning it 5–3. In other words, after losing 13 of the 16 games played during the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons, "The Ship" managed to even the score and finish the most recent campaign with the upper hand in the head-to-head series. To me, that is an evolution worth highlighting—even though winning the head-to-head series doesn't automatically guarantee a better overall season. Yet, Venezuelan baseball is so full of emotion that watching a Caracas-Magallanes game feels like watching a grand final in any sport; it is simply a matter of pride and honor in the face of the rivalry.
When we tally the results of these five seasons, the record stands at 22 wins for Caracas and 17 for Magallanes, with each team having won two head-to-head series and one ending in a tie. While the overall numbers still favor the team from the capital, recent trends give the "Nave" reason to approach this new season with renewed confidence. Of course, this is Venezuelan baseball; history carries weight here, but it doesn't win games. We will have to see if Magallanes maintains that momentum or if Caracas reasserts its dominance. After all, dominating the stats over the last few years is one thing, but stepping onto the field and proving it when these eternal rivals clash is something else entirely. I believe this will be a great season for my beloved "Nave Turca," and—hopefully—we will dominate the series against Leones del Caracas.
