My Postal Theft Experience

We’ve been hearing about postal theft more than ever, since the pandemic. Many have even invested in door cameras to hinder thieves.

I didn’t have a problem with postal theft because I lived in an apartment building that had cameras everywhere. I don’t live at that location anymore.

Now, I have been robbed.

This case has hit me hard. 😢

My Small Dream

I have wanted a quality camera since 1994. When I couldn’t afford one, I couldn’t buy one. Even I could afford one, I either forgot or focused on other matters.

I’ve hesitated to purchase a decent DSLR because they are a moderately big purchase. Many hours, days, weeks have been traded in time to research and cameras. The options that I truly wish for are as expensive as a decent used car, so rather than finalize an affordable purchase that wasn’t preferred, I went without.

... repeating non-purchaser regret.

Until last week, when I finally made the leap and bought a good DSLR camera and lens.

Financial Plan

In addition to enjoying photography, I was hoping to produce a small income taking photos. I was going to:

  • post on my Hive blog
  • attempt to sell images on other sites
  • create NTF art by merging graphic design skills
  • and promote design services using my images and designs as proof of skill

Postal Delivery Fail

Yesterday I saw the postal delivery man holding a box 📦 adorned with the company logo of the business that I bought from. He also had a large pink bag with the logo of another company I was expecting goods from.

Excitement filled my heart and I fought with myself to remain seated on the step. Postal Person saw my glittery eyes 👀 zeroed in so hard that he surely needed to scrub the glitter off in the shower. He said, “I don’t have anything for you today”. I said, “Aww, Ok. You must see excited people all day.” He and I continued a pleasant chat.

I then watched enviously as the delivery person skittered from townhouse to townhouse, playing nicky nicky nine doors with boxes of happiness.

No happiness for me.

After he pulled out of the parking lot, I phoned the pink bag company to see what was up and ask for a refund for the paid expedited delivery fee. I was informed that the package had been delivered and if I needed to express concerns to phone Canada Post.

As I listened to the rolling ring and waited for Canada Post to pickup, I had a thought 💭. Walking over to my neighbour’s step, I remained on hold and checked the address sticker. 😯 The bag at unit 16 listed 18 on it, my address... and my name. Hastily, I hung up the phone and lugged my package home.

Why I didn’t check the other steps is beyond me.

Today, I noticed an email from Henry’s camera store; my package had been delivered yesterday! 😯 What?!? Upon speaking to Canada Post, I concluded that my camera had been given to someone else.

So, I knocked on a few doors in my neighbourhood and everyone said the same thing; “No, I’m sorry” (they didn’t have my items).

But... someone DOES have my box and they’ve NOT returned it.

I feel that my community area is pretty safe regarding theft, but clearly not bullet proof.

No one likes to be stolen from. I certainly am no different. But, this one burns all kinds of extra.

  • I SAW the box
  • I’ve wanted this since I was 14
  • It was a LOT of money
  • The Postal Person WAS TALKING TO ME; was his behaviour intentional? Because, how in the world would he have dropped off two separate packages with the same address to two separate addresses? But what motive would be have for such actions? It seems there’s no motive but I don’t know of any potential unseen factors. ie: he could be friends with someone here, he could have hustled a co-op theft plan with a neighbour, maybe he knows me and I peed in his fruit loops many years ago, perhaps I once upset someone he’s associated with, maybe he was stressed or on drugs or alcohol.
  • I needed the camera for income flow; my city is still in lockdown and the future isn’t looking bright (take off the shades Cory Hart).
  • I thought my neighbours were kind.

As it stands, I’m out $1100 CAD with nothing to show for it.

No happy 📦 for me. 😔
