Great story and beautiful writing style!

I like these kind of sentences:

"There was no traffic on the residential streets that took him home either, although at one stage there was a distant siren and the high-pitched sound of brakes being applied in a hurry."

It's this kind of detail that really makes me picture what's going on. Every time I read this sentence, I'm there, living the story :).
