Luke 3:1-9
Our world is getting more and more comfortable with sin and hypocrisy. The message of Christ’s return and the reward of sinners is gradually becoming an old fashioned thing. We rarely hear preaching emphasizing on repentance from sin and the danger of not having Christ.
John was not scared of losing his congregation, he spoke to the stiff-necked people, without mincing words, that if they fail to change from their wicked ways, they will not escape eternal damnation. He told them to their face that if they refused to worship God, stones will be raised to do it in their stead.
We need to re-examine the gospel being preached in our pulpits that make sinners laugh, feel good, give big offerings and walk out of the church without having any sign of remorse. The kind of gospel that is not reproving people of sin and making them live with eternity in view is not the same as the one seen on the pages of the Bible. If sinners are not asking the question “What shall we do to be saved?” as was the case in Bible times, it calls for re-examining what we preach.
