It is a strange Christmas this year. Usually, I get to spend it with family and friends but to finish off a very challenging year I am in quarantine with my 6-year-old. My wife Clodagh is in Hospital, there is another funeral of a sibling to prepare for and my mother's long term care to organise.
I am usually not one to post my troubles to the chain. Instead. I wait for the dust to settle and document it along with my sculpture when I am far removed from the hardship of the moment. I will also do this someday but not now. I am in survival mode and trying to make the best of this day for my son.
Having a child around at Christmas is always a good thing. They make it more magical as you are also transported back to how it felt as a child. They find joy in simple pleasures. I will admit that he has also been a big support to me as he keeps me busy and does not give me a moment to wallow in all the shit that is going on.
Luckily, Santa paid a visit last night and Fintan is so happy. A Nintendo Switch and lots of lego are sure to keep us entertained in yet another lockdown.
I streamed Christmas morning to my wife in her hospital bed so she could see his little eyes light up. We are happy in this moment and that is all that matters for today.
I couldn't face trying to cook a slap-up Christmas dinner for just the two of us. We will put that on hold for when Clodagh can join us again. We will have another Christmas then. Kindly my sister and brother in law are preparing a Christmas dinner which we are just about to go and collect....
Just got it and we will be eating soon. Looks lovely and makes it feel Christmasy at least.
I don't mean for this post to bring a downer to the proceeding you may be having. Just wanted to write a few words about how I'll be spending Christmas. Unfortunately, I know that there are many out there not having, as they would like, a normal Christmas this year. I believe the last few years have been a big challenge for all around the world but as this Christmas comes to pass I will leave you with some wise words from David, Stephen and Graham. 'Love the one you're with' Even if that is yourself. Although not too much or you will go blind.
Happy Christmas to one and all.
