The Bad is your run-of-the-mill comedy-adventure kind of a movie. This movie embodies what I mean when I say that enjoying a movie can depend on your mindset going into it. Because I enjoyed the movie. But, is it good? Well, that's what this review is for.
Movie Synopsis
The Bad Guys is about a group of criminals known for their elaborate heists. They enter a new world where they have to leave that life behind, at least in appearance.
What I Liked About The Movie
The movie seems to know exactly what it is. It's not setting out to prove a point or show something deeper, like I said, it is a run-of-the-mill movie. It simply invites you to have moderate fun.
The animation is really good. Like, I know we reached a point where animation is at its peak in general. But, this one actually has great animation. The design of the main characters really makes them shine.
A big part of loving a comedy film or any film, in general, is connecting with the characters. You also need those characters to be loveable. And the main characters in this movie were just that.
The humor in this movie worked more than I thought it would work if I am being honest. Going into this I was expecting those Seth Rogen "sex/drugs" obnoxious jokes thrown at me. But, no, the humor in this movie did work at times, which is a great thing to have in a comedy obviously.
The details in the world the movie built are outstanding. You really feel there are a lot of styles were considered in many scenes and they weren't just heatlessly drawn and created to make a quick buck (Looking at you Lion King 2019)
What I Didn't Like About The Movie
It's like splitting hair here but for everything that worked, there's an aspect that didn't.
The animation for example is great and the artistic styles were nice. However, they were inconsistent. Sometimes you see something in great detail, sometimes it's just there. You could see the effect of budget here even with how characters outside the main ones are human rather than different creatures as well.
The comedy does in fact not land at times. And this is not just me being picky as there were a lot of jokes where everyone in the theatre was not laughing at all. Some jokes were quick and stupid throwaway lines which is fine. But, that is just something you should do.
Finally, the story isn't good
You could like the characters all you want, and you should, the voice actors have done great as well as the character designers. But, every movie is a story in the end and this one didn't have a good story.
There were a lot of obvious moments where you know how everything is going to go. The good thing about movies like this is the lack of expectations creates mindless fun, but the bad thing is you have no reason to watch this again at all as even with a lack of expectations they couldn't defy those expectations.
Like, just doing one unexpected thing would have been nice but none of that happened.
In Conclusion
The Bad Guys is just there, if you have nothing better to do, it won't harm. But, if you have anything to do, you will definitely regret watching this movie instead. It has highs and lows all over.

It's a pretty basic movie, I can't stress that enough. It's meant to be a silly comedy and it is just that.
