Ella me enseñó a vivir. Justo mientras ella aprendía a morir.
Ella me mira.

There are photos... and then there are color photos that aren't just viewed. No, they assault you without asking your permission or anything. And suddenly, the floodgates of memory, boom!, burst open, and everything I've experienced comes crashing down on me. That's exactly what happened to me with this one. A normal photo for everyone else, sure, but for me it was like opening a door to my most sacred memories.
The image I'm referring to was proposed by @emiliorios in his initiative To get to know each other better! - Seventh Day Initiative 21 - The Free Association of Ideas: Choose an image as a columnist for the #Holos&Lotus Community. Let's see how this all turns out.
I look and immerse myself in the image... In front of me, a little girl. Her hair is the color of that five o'clock sun, and she's hugging a bouquet of yellow chrysanthemums. And she has a gaze... I don't know how to explain it. Direct. Serene. As if she knew one of those secrets that we adults have already lost along the way. And behind her, all blurred, is an old airplane in a golden field. Maybe it's a promise that someone is leaving. Or maybe it's the witness of an arrival that simply never happened.
Look, that little girl isn't Sofia. But she could be, you know? In that parallel universe where one keeps one's yearnings, there she is. There, I swear she is.
Yellow. What a topic, yellow. I once read somewhere that Goethe said it was the color of light, of joy, and I don't know how many other things. Pure theory. Anyone who has truly lived knows that colors don't have a single meaning; it depends on the very nature of each person's experience. You give them the value, with your story. For me, yellow is... it's the entire map of my daughter Sofia. It's the most brutal happiness and the deepest pain, all at once, how ironic.
Sofía. She came into my life like a flash of yellow light, like a blazing sun that filtered through a hospital window there in Caracas. And for three years, dear reader, everything was that color. The yellow of her laughter in Parque del Este, chasing butterflies. The salty yellow of a day in La Guaira that I'll never forget as long as I live, with her little feet in the sand. The yellow of the ice cream that always, always stained her face. It was a vivid yellow. No tricks, no shadows. Pure life.
But yellow has its messed-up side; we experienced it firsthand. At three years old, leukemia, like a thief; the yellow, of course, changed… It became that pale, waxy yellow of her skin after the first chemotherapy treatments. The fake yellow of the hospital walls, a color that's supposed to cheer you up, but that only screamed fear to me. From one day to the next, the color of life had become the prelude to the worst.
I remember sitting next to her, reading her stories. And she, with a maturity that was beyond her, endured the pain. Her hair, a golden waterfall like the girl in the photo, began to fall out. But her spirit... that thing that no one could touch, that held on. There's a saying, I think it was by Gibran, that pain is what breaks the shell so you can understand. And damn, I saw that shell break in my daughter a thousand times over eight years and I couldn't do anything. And from the cracks, resentment didn't emerge; it emerged a way of seeing the world that I, her father, am still trying to grasp. She taught me how to live. Just as she was learning how to die.
The girl in the photo is still looking at me. And in her eyes, I see that same calm that Sofia had in her final days. She embraces the flowers like my daughter embraced life: with fierce delicacy. And the plane behind her... phew! That plane is surely the key to everything.
A few months after she left, when I was eleven, it was my turn to leave too. The plane that took me out of Venezuela wasn't one of those planes, but in my soul the image was just as blurry, just as distant. A machine that was tearing me away from the only land where she rests. Do you see that? That's what the photo is. It's my farewell. Sofía, up front, clutching her last golden memories, which are the flowers. And me, the plane. A blurry dot in the background, forced to begin a flight without knowing where the hell I was going.
Sixteen years now. I live in a country of white winters, but inside I'm still in a summer of stubborn, intense yellow. Psychologists, of course, have their hypotheses: "complicated grief," "prolonged grief disorder." Pure labels. As if love had to shrink to be "healthy." I prefer another idea I found somewhere, one that says that grieving isn't about "letting go," it's about finding another way to stay connected. It's not about forgetting, it's about relocating...
So, yes, I have relocated Sofía. Let no one tell me she's in a cemetery in Caracas, or her remains. She isn't! She's in the smell of morning coffee, which sometimes, and don't ask me why, mixes with a floral scent in my apartment in Toronto, from that Chi-Chi cologne she loved so much. She's in the dreams I have again and again, where we walk through the park and the sun is so yellow, so real, that it almost burns my skin when I wake up. Her presence isn't a hallucination. She's my anchor. She's proof that love is an energy that never ends, it only transforms.
So, what is this photo? It's not a reminder of death, not at all. It's a manifesto about what remains. The girl is Sofía's free spirit. The flowers are this love I continue to cultivate. And the plane, my journey, my exile… it's no longer a loss. It's the certainty that my body moved, yes, but my soul stayed there with her. And hers travels with me.
The girl in the photo isn't Sofia, I wish! How I'd like to tell you she is. But deep down, in what truly matters, of course she is. She's a symbol, do you understand? Of innocence that is cut short. When I look at her, I don't just see her, I see all the lost daughters, all the loves that last forever. I see all the parents who had to learn that the heart has a memory that laughs at time and death.
She looks at me. And in her silence, she tells me she's fine. That the journey continues.
Because Sofia didn't leave on that plane. She is the journey. And her eternal yellow light is the only compass I need.
A hug full of blessings, my dear pan de leche…
