There are questions that are answered by the mind and others that are answered by the centre of the chest, where the air sometimes grows thick and reminds us that we are alive, even if it hurts. After two weeks of reflection in this community, where silence has been the main witness to my words, I come today to the most difficult question, but also the clearest: If you could keep just one memory, which would it be?
I wouldn’t hesitate for a second. If the fire of life were to consume everything I am, if my mind were a canvas erased by time, I would fight against oblivion to rescue a single fragment of my story: my daughter Sofía’s last embrace.
Sofía passed away shortly after her eleventh birthday. Leukaemia – that word that sounds so cold and technical – set an expiry date on her physical presence, but not on her very essence. Remembering that moment fills me with a mixture of suffocation and gratitude that is hard to explain. We were there, in that space where time becomes elastic, and she, with that wisdom that only children who have looked fate in the face develop, gave me her final words: “Daddy, don’t cry”.
Feeling her fade away in my arms is an experience that redefines the concept of gravity. It is not just that the body becomes weightless; it is that you feel a part of your own soul break away to accompany her on her journey. In that instant, I understood what absolute love means: the kind that would rather shatter into a thousand pieces just to hold the other person until their very last breath.
Sometimes, art serves as a raft to help us cross rivers we do not know how to name. I always remember the film ‘No se aceptan devoluciones’ (directed by Eugenio Derbez, 2013). There is a masterful scene where the daughter, played by the young Loreto Peralta, is carried away in the arms of her father, who learnt to be a father as he went along. I identify deeply with the sentiment that this film seeks to capture: that bond which transcends the biological to become spiritual.
Like the character in the film, I too learnt that being a father isn’t just about protecting your child from the cold or hunger; it’s about being there when the sun goes down, being the final refuge, the last haven before the vastness of the unknown. That portrayal of a child’s fragility set against the father’s broken strength is, for me, the most accurate depiction of what I experienced.
Today, in the solitude of my cottage in Ontario, Sofía is not a static memory in a photograph. She is a breeze coming in through the window. Sometimes, whilst the coffee grows cold or the piano in the background sets the rhythm of my thoughts, I catch that scent of ‘Chi-Chi’, that childish perfume she loved. It is a whiff that makes my skin tingle and calms my pulse.
I feel the touch of her hands on my shoulders, an invisible contact yet as real as the wood of the bench on which I sit. It does not sadden me; on the contrary, it encourages me. I have come to realise that grief is not a place where one stays to live, but a process of transformation. My daughter is not in the past; she dwells in the smallest details of my present. To preserve that memory is to preserve my own humanity.
I know my previous posts haven’t resonated as much as I’d hoped. In a world that craves a quick ‘like’ and instant gratification, talking about the soul and grief seems like an anachronistic exercise. But here I am, and here I’ll stay. If these words reach even one parent who’s been through the same thing, if they inspire someone today to hug their children just a little tighter for a moment, the series will have been worth it.
Preserving a memory isn’t about living in the past. It’s about choosing the cornerstone upon which we’ll build our present. My cornerstone is that hug. A hug which, although it ended physically years ago, continues to sustain me whenever the Canadian winter feels too long.
And you, who stopped to read this... if you had to save just one image, one scent or one sensation from your entire time on this earth, what would be the one essential thing you wouldn’t let oblivion take away?
See you next week to reflect on what we leave behind in others: “When someone thinks of you in twenty years…, what do you hope they’ll remember?”.
