"Charity begins at home," this is a phrase that is often used to show that learning begins from home. Most of the values that resonate with us today were what had been instilled in us from home while growing up.
If I decide to look at it from another perspective, it simply reminds me that home is where the love is, home is where we start to show who we truly are before extending it to others.
There's this particular man in my hood who was very kind to people, he was always there for people in the community whenever they needed his help which made a lot of people loved him until the day his wife revealed that he neglected the needs of his children and her at home only to portray what he is not outside just to earn the respect of those outside, sadly this act didn't sit well with most of the people he has helped and this is where I think Charity begins at home.
I am always of the opinion that one cannot give what they do not have and a bad attitude is like a bad tire which cannot take us far unless we change them for good.
Before we think of helping others, those closest to us should be our first priority and beneficiaries, we begin to show kindness to people in our household before extending it to others, this also include the way we talk to people of our household, are we the type that's rude and saucy only to act all polite outside?
My mom always told me that to know a good person, watch out how such person treats the members of his or her household, no wonder in my village before a man or woman gets married, the in-laws to be take a trip to the household to find out who the person truly is, they don't just believe what the person portrays to be which I find a very wise thing to do.
Self-care isn't exempted as well, the way we love ourselves, care for ourselves reflects how much we will do for others and how well we have been nurtured from home. If we practice kindness often at home, it would become a lifestyle for us, if we learn to accept our mistakes from home, it will be much more easier to be accountable for our actions outside rather than justifying them, if we practice good hygiene, it wouldn't be a problem keeping up with it even when we are far from home and the list goes on.
Home is where we can be ourselves, home is a reflection of who we truly are, how much peace do you bring home? Are you the kind that members of your family smile or cringe at the mention of your name? This is a food for thought.
Take care of home first before impressing the street, and then don't let the love, peace, kindness, empathy, generosity and all the good values end at home, extend it to others after home is fine.
