After the June 24 earthquake, despite the devastation and the loss of so many lives, there was another side to reality. A reality that forced us to keep moving forward even though we felt guilty for not being able to help more—for being alive, for knowing we had a roof over our heads where we could sleep peacefully. The reality of work commitments, daily activities, and the hopes of so many children and young people who are still alive—with dreams, with goals, and with the excitement of receiving recognition for their effort and dedication to their education.
The formal ceremony marking my daughter Ámbar’s first promotion to first grade. It was a very rainy day, with a power outage, and the children were a bit restless from sitting still for so long without much activity. It was undoubtedly a day filled with nostalgia—seeing my little girl read her graduation sponsor’s resume, witnessing her nervousness, and at the same time watching her poise and composure at just 5 years old filled my heart with great pride, as I look forward to her continuing to develop her skills and public speaking abilities.
After the award ceremony and the family photos, everyone stayed there, since we unanimously decided not to hold any large celebrations—neither at the school nor at home—primarily out of respect for the victims and in memory of all the children and young people who were unable to have a graduation ceremony.
I wanted to share a little bit of this day with you and also remind you that life goes on—with scars, but with great resilience. Celebrating each milestone in our children’s lives is also a way of celebrating the effort we, as parents, make every day without a manual, simply doing our best to help our children grow into great people.
Thank you for reading. Hugs
