Roald Dahl is one of Britain's most famous short story writer.His stories are often bizarre but also very funny. "Charlie and The Chocolate Factory" is his most famous story of all.
Dahl's parents were Norwegian, but he was born in Wales in 1916. When he was three years old, his eldest sister and his father died. He went to boarding school at the age of nine. He wrote about some of the unusual things that happened to him as a child in 'Boy: Tales of Childhood' in 1984.
At first, he worked for an oil company in East Africa, then in 1939 he joined the Royal Air Force to fight in the war . In 1942 he was moved to Washington to work in the British Embassy. He began writing there and many of his stories were published in American magazines. He married American actress Patricia Neal and they had three daughters and one son.
His collections of stories such as 'Tales of the Unexpected' are still best-sellers all over the world, as are his books for children such as 'Charlie And The Chocolate Factory' in 1964 and 'Danny, Champion of the World' in 1975. Children love his books because he never forget how to see the world with a child's eyes. Roald Dahl died in 1990.
