Destino

Fate

I never thought things would turn out this way. Throughout my life I believed I was the architect of my own destiny and, with few exceptions, I always felt that I was in control of my life. However, I never believed that at the end of it all, such a belief would prove to be so frighteningly true.

I grew up in constant trouble, I was a vile thief, swindler and drug dealer, I interacted with all kinds of thugs and gangsters, several times I was beaten and left for dead by bill collectors, thugs and "law enforcement officers".

In my wandering through life, the least hectic period of my existence was between my thirties and thirty-three years, it was the only time I can remember having an honest job, at least I thought so until recently.

While I was engaged in collecting winnings from the tables, in a gambling room, managed by the Larzava family, a well known mafia family from the demilitarized zone of Cepheus, Pablo Larzava one of the nephews of the family patriarch, approached me and offered me a new job, better paid and less risky than the one I had.

I would only have to, whenever I was asked, go to a warehouse on the outskirts of the demilitarized zone, pick up a box containing waste and throw it into one of the sulfuric acid pits in the desert of Gaul, an unpopulated and arid region in the middle of the continent. For doing this, I would be paid twenty thousand credits for each container I discarded. The only condition imposed on me was that I was not to open the containers.

Of course I assumed it would be something shady and when I asked Pablo Larzava what they contained, he told me it was only biological waste, from the illegal clinics, which could not be disposed of in the regulated way.

The law of Cepheus does not prohibit the transportation of biological waste, as long as it is properly packaged, Larzava told me, and the desert of Galia is a region completely removed from the jurisdiction of any city, so, formally, he would not be committing any kind of crime. So I would not be at risk with the authorities.

Without thinking twice, I accepted the proposal and immediately Pablo Larzava gave me the starter key of a small and rickety transport ship and advanced me the first twenty thousand credits, he told me they were courtesy and to be on the lookout for my first assignment.

I didn't have to wait too long, at noon the next day Pablo called me and told me to check my credit account, that I had already been paid again, and that I had work to do.

I went to the warehouse and there, in the middle of the only and almost completely unoccupied cargo bay, was a sealed orange container, the size of a coffin, that had a large biohazard logo on its cover and the number 001. It was heavy, maybe a hundred and fifty kilos, and I mounted it on a sliding platform and lifted it onto the transport ship.

As instructed by Paul, I flew straight out into the desert, positioned myself over the first big pit I could find, opened the cargo door and let the thing slide out and drop into the pit, sinking almost immediately.

I was doing that job for the next three years of my life, until after several hundred deliveries, one afternoon, Paul called me into his little office in the old gambling hall where I used to work. That was it, he told me, I would no longer be needed and to check my credit account, I could see a deposit of two hundred thousand, he told me it was my settlement and that he hoped I had a good life.

I said goodbye to him and thought I would never see him again. For a few years I lived comfortably on what I had earned, moved into an apartment in the city and thought the demilitarized zone was part of my past.

But it's not easy to leave the old ways behind, even more so when the money runs out and you no longer have enough to pay the rent on your expensive apartment, support your vices or keep hiring the prostitutes you used to have fun with. After a little more than twenty years of dedicating myself to pure hedonism, I was completely broke and back on the streets.

I was a pimp, bill collector and hired thug, but plying the trade in the city is not as easy as it was on the lawless streets of the demilitarized zone. I was apprenticed and spent ninety years in the penal colony of CB989.

When I got out of there, I returned to my old and familiar demilitarized zone, where like the good son I was, I again went into business, working on my own, dealing anything I could get my hands on, until, it seems, I got involved in someone's business that I shouldn't have.

So it was that in the middle of the night, while I was sleeping, after a drunken binge, I felt that they pulled me by my feet, threw me to the floor, and kicked me until I lost consciousness. I woke up in the middle of a place that at times seemed familiar to me, but I couldn't remember from where, I was hanging by my wrists attached to a ceiling beam and in front of me was the aged face of someone I never expected to see again.

-Damn it, Bernardo, I never expected to see you again, -said a gray-haired and wrinkled Pablo Larzava-. You know, fate is cruel, I never thought these damn coincidences could happen.

-What the hell do you want, I haven't messed with the Larzava family, I haven't meddled in their business, -I said stammering with difficulty, I guess because of my beaten body.

-That's right Bernardo, but you know, the Larzava family has diversified, we have other markets and other associates, and you are dealing in the territory of one of our associates and that affects our family's profits, -he said sitting down on a bench in front of me.

-I'm sorry Pablo, but I didn't know that, I swear, if you let me, I will go away, I will leave the demilitarized zone and I will leave your business alone, -I said.

-I wish I could, but I can't, the old man told me to get rid of you, and you know he doesn't like to be contradicted, besides he asked me to make you the first to test our new discovery, -he said, standing up-. Don't you recognize the place?

-Please Pablo, I swear you will never see me again, you will never hear from me again, -I said pleadingly, not paying attention to his question.

-Bring him, -he said.

I felt them lift me up, holding me by the legs and unhooking me from the chain from which I hung, they threw me like a beaten and bloody lump on a sliding platform and took me to another room.

In the middle of that place floated a strange, crystalline sphere, which seemed to be made of liquid, and inside it seemed to reflect, in an inverted form, a place I knew.

It was the loading bay of that warehouse where, for three years, I removed waste containers. I didn't understand what I was seeing until I saw Pablo standing next to one of those orange containers, which on its open lid had, next to the biohazard logo, the number 001.

-You will be the first of many Bernardo, destiny definitely seems to mock us, -said Pablo Larzava, while pointing an electric gun at me, from which I could see a flash of blue, just before everything went black forever.
