—Pero, ¿Qué he hecho? —.

Line Change

His ship was approaching Earth, had the time been different, he would not have managed to violate the exclusion, the interception devices would have interrupted the course of his ship, and surely, his controls would have been confiscated and taken several hundred light years away from the exclusion zone, where he would most likely be held by the militia and brought to account in the courts of the nearest world.

The beautiful blue silhouette of that world, primordial home of humanity, was drawn in the viewfinder of the cockpit of his ship, just tens of decades before, the atmosphere had been purged of all pollutants, and now looked as clear as he had imagined it.

After a short braking procedure, the small ship went into low orbit, he knew he should not descend, it would be harmful to alter anything in that beautiful world, he would devote himself only to observe and record his visit, to bring evidence of his adventure to the stupid people of the faculty council. Those who denied him the budget to carry out his research and forced him to become an enemy of The Parliament, in order to finance his work.

Through his screen he could see the scans of the planet, the presence of life forms, many of them non-existent on the colonized worlds, and on the western continent of the southern hemisphere, the only human settlements on the planet, some eighty small, but thriving cities, which rose from the ruins of their predecessors, hundreds of years earlier razed to the ground by the great catastrophe.

It was fabulous and practically inconceivable for him to be able to see it almost in person, and his record would be the inescapable proof of the success of his work. That work that was scorned almost as heretical by his colleagues, closed minds, unable to see the possibilities of his research.

After eight hours of orbiting the planet and recording everything that was within his reach, he turned on the gravitational impulse engine and began to accelerate to leave orbit, but fortune turned his face, the engine began to fail and instead of propelling him, he put the ship to spin out of control, making it lose speed and taking it to a decaying orbit.

He tried by all means, but he could not stop the fall, and the acceleration was beginning to be unbearable for his body, there was only one thing left to do, he would have to turn on the antimatter thrusters to stabilize the ship and, risking to be discovered, activate the device, inside the terrestrial atmosphere, at least that way, after falling, he could be helped by the rescuers of the Parliament.

As he performed the maneuver, he recalled his colleagues' objections to his work, that it was unnecessarily risky; "knowledge of the field of multiversal dynamics was too speculative to take the risk," said Leonard Cosgrog, "The effect of a saturated tachyon field on spacetime can be devastating on small and medium scales, just like the feedback from a bridge," said Enmanuel Vallenilla.

But the most lapidary were those of his tutor, Dr. Ismael Di Martino "Bernabé, you have always been more of a friend than a disciple to me, but, it is not sensible to play with the fabric of spacetime, your work, although correct and mathematically coherent, is irresponsibly unethical, not to say risky, to endorse it, and I am afraid to say it, but the simple idea of carrying it out, is almost the sign of an unbalanced mind".

Now, when the unforeseen became reality, he hoped that his actions were not proving his detractors right, he thought, as he managed to stabilize the ship, which by that time was already several kilometers over the Atlantic Ocean, about to fly over the south western continent, he would not have time to reach the Pacific, it had to be now or he could lose control of the ship and crash.

Remembering again Di Martino's words, he activated the controls of the device, which emitted an intense buzzing sound, generated a saturated field of tachyons, while emitting a pulse of strange particles, which broke the space time, generating, over the south western continent, a bridge of a couple of kilometers in diameter, in which Bernabe's ship plunged, disappearing, there were few people in the jungle of the eastern coast of the continent, who managed to see it, but the entire continent could feel the after effect.

That bridge was not like any other, the bridges that swarmed the Orion arm, all of them created by humans, were stable passable bridges, leading from one region of space to another, saving, in some cases, thousands of years of travel at maximum travel speeds in space-time momentum.

That bridge fed back, leading whoever used it, to a translocation of time and space, where when moving spatially, it did so in time, without the occurrence of a real spatial displacement. That is to say, it could travel forwards or backwards in time, without a spatial displacement and contrary to the other bridges, because of the gigantic energies that accumulated at the entrance of this one, due to the feedback, it ended up collapsing in a burst.

Some twenty-eight hours earlier, at least in Barnabas' time, he had done the same thing, but he had done it in the fifty-eighth millennium, ten light years from Earth, before reaching the exclusion zone, in the middle of uninhabited space, and at that moment, after entering the bridge with his ship, it disappeared, in the middle of an explosion, comparable to the explosion of the antiparticle reactor of an old cruise ship, which alerted all the sensors located in the exclusion zone of the Earth.

But Barnabas never knew about this explosion, for him his trip had only lasted a few uncomfortable fractions of a second, in which he only felt a "pop" in his ears. After which, he had traveled, not in space, but in time more than sixty thousand years into the past, to the Earth, prior to the first space migrations, to the Earth that had just risen from the catastrophe and unknown to him tens of thousands of years in the future, the descendants of its inhabitants would have spread over almost a quarter of the galaxy, and even to regions so far away that if the Earth could be seen from them, it would be seen as it was even before life proliferated on it.

But the inhabitants of the Earth of this time did manage to see the explosion produced by the collapse of the bridge, which Barnabas left behind when he returned to his time. It occurred on the eastern coast of the southwestern continent, an intense flash that ignited the atmosphere and whose shock wave and heat spread throughout the continent, destroying and burning everything in its path, charring everything that was standing and annihilating all forms of life in its path.

Thousands of years later, on this devastated Earth, a ship emerged from a suddenly appeared bridge, several kilometers high, over an inland sea located in a huge crater on the shores of the eastern coast of the continent.

Bernabe continued to fly over the continent which now appeared barren with regions covered in crystallized rocks, as if parts of the mantle had been exposed by some kind of devastating explosion and where there seemed to be no trace of life. After several minutes of silent observation, he put his hands to his head, intertwined his fingers, stretched his hair and closed his eyes. -But what have I done? -. She thought, while the ship, irremediably continued to fall into that now devastated planet.

At the same time, in the exclusion zone, aboard a military ship, Dr. Di Martino was taking readings of the alterations of the gravitational field, generated, some twenty-eight hours earlier, by the explosion of the bridge created by the machine built by his former disciple, Barnabas, when the captain of the ship approached him.

-What do you think we should do now, doctor? -. The captain asked, with a face of consternation, "Where should we look for him, do you think he will come back? -.

I doubt it, by the theory of multiversal dynamics, I think that when he entered through that bridge, he caused a bifurcation in the space-time line, and he will not be able to return to this time, and if he does, it will not be to this same line, but to one generated by his intrusion in the past.
